JTI Tips Judicial Officers in Eastern Uganda on Cybercrime
Participants at the Cyber Crime Training

More than 40 Judicial Officers serving in Eastern Uganda are undergoing a two-day training on "Cybercrime; It's emerging trends and evidence management" at Mbale Resort Hotel Limited in Mbale City.

The training was opened by the Judicial Training Institute (JTI) Executive Director, Lady Justice Damalie N Lwanga who was flanked by the Mbale Circuit Resident Judge, Justice Farouq Lubega.

The Executive Director noted that there have been developments in law regarding electronic evidence which needed to be brought to the Judicial Officers' attention.

She noted that there was need for the judicial officers to respond to the development in technology vis-a -vis serving the needs of society.

Justice Lwanga drew the attention of participants, who included Registrars and Magistrates, to the challenges judicial officers face while adjudicating cases involving; electronic evidence. She noted challenges such as authenticity, encryption, and sheer volume of data which she believed that they would be able to handle with knowledge after the training.

She extended gratitude to the Judiciary Top Management for availing the funds to conduct the training. 

Justice Lubega appreciated the timely training which he believed would be essential in equipping the Judicial Officers with the necessary knowledge and skills to handle cases related to cybercrime effectively.

"This understanding will enable us to approach cases with the necessary depth of insight and sensitivity," he said.

The Resident Judge noted the need for Judicial Officers to get acquainted with the nature of cybercrime in all its facets.

The participants are being taken through topics including; Introduction to Cybercrime; It's Types, Characteristics and Trends, the Legal Framework of Cyber Crime, Collection and Prevention of Digital and Forensic Evidence in Cybercrime Cases, the Role of a Prosecutor on Cybercrime Uganda’s Legal Framework in Cybercrime Cases, Presentation.

The other topics are Admissibility and Assessment of Digital and Forensic Evidence in Cybercrime Cases, the role of Uganda Communications Commission in Facilitating Investigation and Prosecution of Cyber Cases.

The JTI Registrar, HW Prossy Katushabe and Deputy Registrar JTI , HW Faisal Mulalira Umar are moderating the training.
